Flat rate boxes make shipping easier

I would like to respond to the letters about the postage being costly for our soldiers. My husband is serving in Japan. My family and I send him packages all the time, but very seldom pay more than $7.70 for a priority package. My mother works for the U.S. Postal Service. She told me about the flat rate priority boxes. She uses these packages to send to the soldiers that she and Dad adopted. Plus she is sending packages to my husband and some of his shipmates.

My mom adopted more than 40 soldiers at one point. She would write to them every week, and every month she’d send all of them packages. She held a fundraiser at Thrifty Foods in Stanwood and was able to send more than 200 packages to our soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. Iraqi Children’s Drive helped her get some of those packages there. Mom and I mailed 400 Valentines to our troops and the packages were at the most $7.70. My mom really helped my husband and me out by mentioning the flat rate boxes. This is mail sent priority but at a lower cost.

My mom told me that if I went to the post office Web site I could print out a coupon for a 10 percent discount on the phone cards I send to my husband. Need help? Just ask the clerks at the post office. Or check out the Web site at www.usps.com.

My husband wants to make the Navy a career. I read recently that the postal service’s revenue is used for the armed forces retirement. I want my husband to be able to have money when he retires, so I gladly use the post office.
