Flights won’t ruin beautiful Mukilteo

I just read with interest Julie Muhlstein’s Friday column. I don’t frequently agree with Ms. Muhlsten, but she is right on with this one. A vital part of a local economy is air transportation and this county is being held hostage by a few “NIMBYs” (not in my back yard people).

The airport is paid for by the taxpayers of the entire county and it is completely unfair that a few people in Mukilteo and unincorporated Edmonds are keeping literally thousands of us from using an underserved, world-class airfield.

If it is good enough for Boeing, surely it is good enough for Boeing’s customers. In addition, how many people can honestly say that they moved to Mukilteo because there was no commercial air service at Paine Field? Mukilteo is a beautiful and historic city.

I just refuse to believe the airport issue was a deal maker/breaker for most of those people fortunate enough to live in Mukilteo. This issue should be put up for a countywide referendum.

It is time to grow up — we have more than 600,000 residents in this county. How many are making the trip to Sea-Tac per year? How much tax money is lost when those people purchase food or hotel rooms in King County? How much extra traffic is on the freeway due to them? It is time to end the “airport” tyranny that has existed since I moved to Snohomish County in 1991.
