Gardener plants lovely thoughts in column

Thursday morning’s Herald had an awesome gift for its readers on this fifth day of Christmas. Each Thursday I turn to the paper’s Home & Garden section to read Steve Smith’s (a.k.a. the Whistling Gardener) column to learn from his wealth of gardening knowledge. His witty, almost always sarcastic, and sometimes curt style of writing is a joy to read. While always infused with sage advice, his columns often leave one wondering if perhaps Ebenezer roams the paths of Sunnyside Nursery.

In Thursday’s column, “This gardener’s final words of wisdom for the year,” it is apparent Steve was recently visited by the ghost of gardening past, for his piece contained great poignancy … of venturing beyond the norm to explore the true meaning (and blessings) of the gardening activity …and of being vulnerable to let us see just what makes The Herald’s Whistling “Ebenezer” tick. In today’s everyday world of cruel behavior and mean-spirited words, we all benefit to at least occasionally step back and smell the roses … to read and hear more than the cold, harsh, less-than-objective world of CNN and Fox News. No lump of coal this morning, but rather a true diamond in the rough. Kudos to The Herald for continuing to publish Marysville’s own gardening “gem,” who in reality is no “Ebenezer” at all. Thanks for Thursday’s prose. I cut it out to save.
