Reading your latest comparison of candidates in the 39th District (“Incumbent Republican legislators challenged,” Oct. 20, Local News), I am startled at how out of touch incumbent Kirk Pearson appears. Conversely, his challenger, Pedro Gonzales, seems far more in touch with the new and changing 39th District. Pearson continually reiterated his role on the Appropriations Committee, while the state bleeds a $1 billion budget deficit. This does not seem to be competent leadership. Gonzales, on the other hand, is saying the right things on issues that matter, such as cheaper prescription drugs, exploring NASCAR, and eliminating the business &occupation tax.
It’s no surprise, though, when one sees who Pearson’s major contributors are (according to public disclosure records). From big developers (Boise Cascade), insurance industry executives (Farmers Group), the pharmaceutical industry (Pfizer), tobacco (PhillipMorris), to big oil (British Petroleum), the Republican represents the wrong people. Gonzales, the Democrat, clearly intends to represent his constituency, the people of the 39th District.
