While there are very clear choices in two of our three races in District 38 (Mike Sells and Jean Berkey), the Position 1 race presents some difficulty.
I am a lifelong Democrat, a Democrat PCO, and have never voted for a Republican in a partisan race until this year. Kim Halvorson has shown me that she not only has a terrific grasp on the issues, but is the kind of voice that we need in Olympia: a voice of the people.
Kim’s lack of political experience is one of her strong points. She is not a lobbyist in any sense of the word, she is not a bureaucrat, and she isn’t beholden to her party of choice in this election. To be quite honest, I think she would make a decent Democrat.
Kim has a strong sense of what needs to change in Olympia to ease traffic, get health-care costs under control and create good jobs. She is willing to listen and carry the banner for the hard-working citizens of this district, not the special interests.
While I believe Kim’s challenger wants what is best for the district, his long background of special-interest lobbying does not serve the district well. Equally, anyone who thinks that bringing Wal-Mart into our community is akin to creating good-paying jobs must not pay attention to the salary and benefit scales of that company.
While so much focus in the media has been on the presidential race, I hope the citizens of this district and county remember that these local races are the ones that affect them most. And I hope they remember a true representative of the people, Kim Halvorson, when they go to the polls and mail in their absentee ballots.
