Before Tuesday’s election gives us a new Snohomish County executive, a long overdue thank you should be extended to the current executive, Bob Drewel.
To set the stage, 12 years ago the governments of the county and cities were bitterly arguing about who had authority and who should determine how to handle growth for the county. The county government was sure it had the authority and was ready, willing and determined to use it. The cities and towns had the levels of service desired by much of the county’s citizenry.
The situation was ripe for rancorous conflicts where no solutions would be reached. This is where Executive Drewel and his staff intervened. His approach of thoughtful, respectful negotiations with shared responsibilities turned a political train wreck into cooperative governance. His faith in elected officials “doing the right thing” created the trust so vital for mutual success for all.
Thank you, Bob. You made us all look good. I wish you the best in your future endeavors. You served Snohomish County well.
Former mayor of Bothell
