Herman’s Big Fish is a first class fishing store in Mukilteo run by a father and son team, Al and Mike Herman. In addition to their full line of fishing gear, bait and know-how, Al and Mike really care about local teens in trouble. Al and Mike recently taught six troubled youth from the ASAP program with Snohomish County Juvenile Court how to build custom fishing rods. Mike and Al spent hours showing each youth how to construct and finish a fishing rod. You added a handle, eyes, and finished the pole off with custom trout emblems and a coat of finish.
Funding was provided by the Blanche Miller Trust Fund and local artist Henri Wilson helped organize the project. Each pole will go on display for two years for others to see and appreciate. At the end of two years the fishing rods will go to the youth who made them. The idea behind the project was to give troubled teens a positive chance to experience the outdoors hands-on. A huge thank you to Mike and Al for tons of patience and great fish stories that made the teens eyes light up! Several of the youth commented that they could not wait to go fishing this year!
