High school players deserve attention

We were disappointed to see The Herald’s article on the County Am dated June 3 “Kelly wins County Am.” There were only two sentences telling about the second place winners, Chad Gorney and Alex Stamey. Chad is a Cascade High School senior who played on the Cascade Golf Team and received the Evans Scholarship to the University of Washington. This scholarship was given to only seven students in the state. Our son, Justin, who was his caddy, and Chad both made it to state AAAA golf this year.

I think it was very remarkable that an 18-year-old student would make it into the final group of men who have been golfing for a while, but nothing was mentioned about that in the article. Chad Gorney deserved more press than was given him in your paper.

We have been disappointed in your coverage of school golf this season. Cascade’s golf team received first place at the Egber’s Invitational (which is one of the most prestigious boy’s golf tournaments in the state), but there was no coverage of that golf tournament in your paper. Three of the top four teams were from Snohomish County.

We find it amazing how much you give to other school sports, i.e. track or cross country, and yet there are probably more people playing golf in the community than running track. High school golfers are just as dedicated as other sports, but get little in the paper. We hope next season you will give more space to high school golf.
