Higher education a better bet for region

Instead of making NASCAR rich, why not enrich the minds of people? How about using $200 million to build a college? Maybe build an extension of the University of Washington.

If the track is built, who will profit?

1. NASCAR will earn more money.

2. Lt. Gov. Brad Owen, County Executive Aaron Reardon and the mayors of Marysville and Arlington will profit from more recognition.

3. Race fans will love the track in the vicinity. How many executives and fans live near the proposed track?

4. The Tulalip and Stillaguamish tribal casinos will make more money. WalMart, the outlet mall and the new hotels will profit.

If an institution of higher learning were built – who will profit?

1. Students would not have to travel to Everett, Seattle, Bothell, Bellingham or Pullman for their education.

2. Instead of room and board, students of the area could live in their own homes. Spending two years at a community type school would mean less cost getting a degree.

3. If students do not have to travel a long distance, it could mean less highway traffic and less gasoline consumed.

4. A school could provide a great reference for the public use of library, seminars or special classes for young children.

5. Senior citizens could benefit from easy access to classes such as art, music, languages, creative writing, financial planning, computer savvy or history of the world.

6. A school would provide jobs all year.

Five hundred acres to park cars and RVs. All it will enrich are the pockets of the promoters. A school campus would enrich the minds of people. Having the school would better protect the environment. Part of the curriculum could address environmental issues.

County Executive Aaron Reardon has a $16.5 million deficit. Why give away $200 million for a track that is only beneficial to the promoters and people who like races?
