Don’t evict historical society
I am a life- long resident of Mukilteo and a long-time member of the Mukilteo Historical Society.
I want to thank the Mukilteo Chamber of Commerce for contributing to our community but the proposal to move the Chamber from its current building to a building currently occupied by the Mukilteo Historical Society (Quarters A) caught us all by surprise. We felt betrayed that the chamber would go behind our back and possibly pressure the mayor to suggest this without coming to us first to discuss and explore. This is not being a good neighbor.
Quarters A is a historical building. In addition to our work in preserving it we also use it as part of our mission to identify and catalog items such as historical photographs, artifacts and the like as well as create education displays for visitors. Our volunteers — known as “The A Team” — have spent countless hours, tirelessly working to preserve our history for our community. Many of our volunteers are retired senior citizens who are literally dedicating their last years to our mission, and Quarters A is like a second home. The A Team is also instrumental in updating the exhibits that we have on the property. Our use of the property is consistent with the conditions imposed on the city when transfer of the property was accepted. The Chamber’s proposed use of Quarters A is not and as such, could cause the entire property to be forfeited to the federal Government.
We understand the Chamber would like to be on the waterfront and this could happen in the future as the waterfront is developed. Until then, hands off our historical properties!
