House should adopt Senate bill on sex education

State senators just voted to pass SB 5395 which would require comprehensive sex education be taught in schools, with a focus on consent. Washington students report high rates of sexual coercion, and even sexual violence, according to the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction. Young people need to understand what a healthy relationship looks like and practice good communication skills before they become sexually active.

Our students need access to sex education that includes consent and healthy relationships from a young age, but not all school districts provide this information. I applaud Sens. John McCoy, D-Tulalip, and Jesse Salomon, D-Shoreline, for their support of this bill in the Senate. Now it’s up to Reps. June Robinson, D-Everett; Mike Sells, D-Everett; Cindy Ryu, D-Shoreline; and Lauren Davis, D-Shoreline to help prevent sexual violence and ensure that all young people know how to keep themselves safe by supporting SB 5395 when it gets to the House.
