How can the most liberal unite us?

I’m a conservative-leaning libertarian who has nothing personal against Barack Obama; he seems like a friendly, relatively honest and decent family man. However, could someone please explain to me how this Democrat with the single-most liberal, and thus least conservative, voting record in the U.S. Senate, is supposed to unite Democrats and Republicans, liberals and conservatives?

This is not a flip question; I would truly like to know — specifically. I like the idea of an exciting young presidential candidate stirring things up, but I’m still waiting for the guy to actually say something. His speeches are full of pretty words, but of dreadfully little substance. Does uniting the Ds and Rs mean he’s gonna move to the right or at least the center? Is he going to moderate his collectivist political philosophy? If not, then what exactly does he mean?

Before a candidate dons the mantle of leading the most powerful country on Earth, at one of the more critical junctures in history, don’t we deserve more than pretty platitudes and charming demagoguery?
