An article in the May 4 Herald announced that the boondoggle investigation of the Marysville coaches has completely cleared them of harassment and intimidation (“Marysville athletic probe clears coaches”). Big surprise!
My husband taught for 38 years in Marysville and coached baseball for many years; our three sons graduated from Marysville and all played sports. The current investigation has spurred many lively conversations in our home. All are able to cite many instances when coaches (Mike Lowery’s name comes up often) were mentors and positive role models.
It was also noted in the article that there are over 1,200 students currently participating in athletic programs in Marysville. Assuming that most of these students come from two-parent homes, we’ll use 2,000 parents as a figure; then because this investigation was launched by the district and board on the complaints of nine parents, that leaves 1,991 parents in the district who are not dissatisfied. Will these nine parents still be available to us as watchdogs for fairness in athletics when their kids are gone? I think not.
Where is the fiscal responsibility for the board and the superintendent in launching this expensive search for misdeeds at the same time they are cutting budget items due to reduced funding?
It would appear that one superintendent has created more problems and divisiveness than all the coaches in recent history.
And lastly, I have seven grandchildren in the Marysville School District. I am very interested in the district’s publication of the complete cost of this investigation so that I know just how much money was diverted from my grandchildren’s education to this dog and pony show.
