I read with interest the column by Ellen Goodman on Dec. 15 (“Uncertainty is part of mammogram picture”). I also noticed the editorial cartoon on the same subject. I would like to encourage every woman who has been putting off getting a mammogram to go ahead and get one.
My family history was reason for me to get one at the age of 35. I am now 39 and finally went in. The horror stories, the jokes and the fear of the unknown were what led me to put it off. I went to the clinic at the Medalia Medical Center in Monroe. I was in and out in less than 15 minutes. It wasn’t cold, it didn’t hurt, it wasn’t even the least bit uncomfortable. And now I have a baseline to use for screening in the years to come.
There has been too much negative publicity about mammograms. I say, they aren’t too bad at all! And I am glad I went. The peace of mind is worth it.
