I read with interest James McCusker’s column, “UW now faces an opportunity for change.” In the column he mentions that “The UW is shifting the composition of its admissions to increase the proportion of higher-paying out-of-state and foreign students.” He goes on to write “The Legislature controls tuition at the UW, so the university can bring in more revenue by increasing the number of students who pay nonresident tuition.”
After reading that, I wondered why the state of Washington, with its $5 billion budget shortfall and the Legislature’s “attack” on the education and public safety side of the budget, allows illegal aliens in this state, who are violating federal law, to pay in-state tuition. Subsidizing tuition, with our tax money for those in this country illegally, most likely amounts to thousands of dollars per individual.
I believe Washington is one of only nine states that allows this. I really don’t think the majority party in Olympia wants to look at this 400-pound gorilla sitting in their chambers — along with the driver’s license issue.
