Individuals must step forward now

I agree with the May 30 letter regarding the environmental tipping point that has been reached. The letter writer is right, we cannot fail to act now.

It is encouraging to know that many people locally are already working on environmental issues. I have met with people from the City of Everett, Snohomish County, the City of Seattle, and the PUD who are all working on efforts to help the environment, be it recycling, composting, organic gardening, water quality, energy efficiency, etc. Local groups like Green Everett, Transition Everett and the Foundation for Sustainable Community are putting forth tremendous efforts on behalf of the environment as well.

My hope is that even more individuals will step forward and become actively involved. Whether it is riding your bike or walking instead of driving, eating local food, eating less meat, reducing waste, using CFLs, planting a garden, consuming less, reusing more, using a lower temperature setting when doing laundry or whatever it may be, all these small steps add up to help the environment. There are international movements such as 350.org that show that individuals can and need to make a difference on behalf of the planet. And the time is now.

Whatever you choose to do, just do it. Our children and the generations to follow are counting on us. If we wait for “them” to do it, it may be too late. I don’t want my daughter’s children’s children’s children looking back and wondering why we didn’t do enough while we had the chance.
