The wood stove industry is working hard to clean up the air quality in Darrington and around Puget Sound. We were in on the ground floor to help put together the wood stove change-out program in Darrington because we have been conducting wood stove change-out programs in the greater Puget Sound area since the 1980s and know these types of programs work, and work well. In other areas where we have conducted change-out programs, wood smoke emissions have been reduced by over 60 percent. We hope to do better than that in Darrington.
On a broader scale, our industry has partnered with state and local regulators to improve air quality. The results have been nothing short of amazing. Currently, wood smoke concentrations in the Puget Sound area had been reduced by more than 75 percent, as compared to what they were in the mid-1980s. And we continue to work to make air quality even better while protecting the rights of individuals to use wood heat responsibly.
