I was surprised on Aug. 24 when The Herald, using the Forum page in the Opinion section, promoted the “sage” words of Jordan Kline, The Herald’s editorial page intern, giving him the same political weight as David Broder’s and George Will’s commentaries.
His column was something that should have seen the light in letters to the editor only. It was almost as if it was written from the Democratic National Headquarters daily handouts given to those who don’t do their homework, but copy the work of others and then publish it as their own thoughts.
Mr. Kline’s opinion as to the real threat to the nation deserves no credence because he does not even know why the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq are being fought. Not for oil nor Saudi Arabia or any other of his facetious arguments, but to defeat terrorism that has vowed to change all the civilized countries of the world to a radical form of Islamic fundamentalism through destruction of our way of life. They do not want civilization, as we know it, to continue. Nor do they want a free Iraq, for then other countries in the Middle East will demand liberty and freedom also.
Naivet, as this column shows, carries no gravitas.
