This is my 12th year of teaching. This is my eighth year of teaching in the Marysville District. Strikes are about power and control, not about money. This includes the Marysville teachers’ strike. I am not getting paid a penny to picket. I have been picketing every weekday. Most days I start picketing at 8 a.m.
I teach because I want to. I am in my 40s, so if I wanted to work in another career, I would already be doing so. I realize that because of the length of the strike, some of our wonderful, fabulously supportive parents are turning against us. I feel sad, frustrated, disappointed, discouraged and angry about many things about this strike. But, I also have faith in parents’ abilities to hang in there, and I have faith in my colleagues. We cannot just go back to the classrooms, because then this strike would be in vain.
