In response to the Monday letter, “For safety we must OK roads plan”: I am all for investing in public safety on our roads and bridges, but the Roads and Transit package (Propostion 1) is completely wrong for the voters of this county.
This measure sets up a “blackmail” scenario for Snohomish county voters either vote “yes” for this package or get no funding for local needs. A yes vote sends 65 cents of every new tax dollar to King County for building of their toy trains (light rail) which will make no measurable contribution to solving our transportation needs. The cost of light rail is absolutely staggering compared to reasonable alternative transportation solutions. It is shameful that officials could not come up with a plan that provides needed transit improvements at a reasonable cost to taxpayers, and that they (and their supporters) will use the recent bridge tragedy in Minnesota as a “guilt trip” to get people to vote yes. Can you say sham? Better alternatives to the Roads and Transit plan are described at the Web site www.truthabouttraffic.org.
