As a parent I’m excited about the opportunity of having the University of Washington North Puget Sound in Snohomish County and near Snohomish for my children. I believe the Lake Stevens site has strong benefits to the east county area citizens and businesses of today and tomorrow.
In my career of economic development, I know first-hand the importance of higher education to the business community. One question that all companies ask when evaluating potential site locations is about the availability of higher education and workforce training opportunities. Studies show that universities have a key role in economic development, which is more than just a provider of human capital. Universities also aid in economic development by taking the longer view.
Much of economic development takes place over a long cycle, and universities are able to provide leadership that is not tied to a short-term agenda. It would also provide an alternative corridor for job development along Highway 9 and the region could expect to see a reduction in the number of commuters forced to travel southward for their employment on Highway 9 or I-5.
A university located in Lake Stevens would be a catalyst to spur new capital investment in the areas of east Snohomish County.
