Most people know that if you blow through a school bus stop paddle that the bus driver can fill out a report to the local police jurisdiction and you will most likely get a ticket in the mail.
On March 29, Gov. Gregoire signed into law SSB 6363, giving school crossing guards the same authority if a driver passes through our extended stop flags when we are crossing children on their way to school.
As a crossing guard in the Lake Stevens School District, I have had several near misses from inattentive drivers. A guard in Federal Way was recently hit while on duty and a guard in Ohio was killed by a dump truck speeding through her school zone. A police officer can’t be there every day to witness these events. The Legislature gave me one more tool to help keep our kids safe.
Please slow down in school zones; I’m watching you.
