As a person close to the issue regarding the NASCAR proposal north of Marysville, I would like to make a few comments
As a member of Snohomish County Citizens Against a Racetrack, I was obviously opposed. However, some good things came out of this. I understand the feelings of those who believe this track would have been good for this area. There is no gloating here, although I feel some vindication.
It is my belief that Marysville and Snohomish County had much different “expectations” than the International Speedway Corp. Also, I believe that the geology at this track site was an engineering challenge that may have proven to require funds much higher than originally expected for the track and stands themselves, not to mention other “special” issues.
I think our leaders saw the costs beginning to spiral, and that they were not “penciling out” as stated by our county executive. This was the basis for their decision. Although some folks may feel they got out too early, this is hard to say. We don’t know exactly what transpired.
As ISC continues to look for a location in the Pacific Northwest, those “expectations” on both sides, along with other factors such as the basic geology and cost to construct the facility, may come together differently the second time around, hopefully with a good result for all concerned.
As for Marysville and Snohomish County, it is my hope that improvements to Edgecomb Creek, as envisioned in their proposal, can be evaluated and completed over time and that other lands that were to be used primarily for the racing facility can be developed in a sensible and economically viable manner.
I intend to keep my ears and eyes open regarding things happening in and around Snohomish County.
