Since Sept. 11, we’ve had to look at a lot of people who have just found out that they are Americans. As far back in our families’ history as we can recall, there has always been a part of us serving the country. We’ve given our husbands, fathers, sons and loved ones. We’ve always flown the flag high and strong, and will for as long as we live. We hope the fury will last for as long as it takes. Just don’t ever forget that first and foremost we’re Americans.
Our feelings go out to the children of Afghanistan, but we can’t forget the child next door. A cold winter is coming with many fathers and mothers without a paycheck. The food banks are low, and so are the clothing centers. We must take care of our homefront before we are able to take care of others. Please take a moment to look around your neighborhood school and see how many children wear used clothes. Look to see the mother in line at the grocery store who counts change to buy bread and milk. There’s the father coming from the pawn shop without his wedding ring because the heating bill must be paid. Let’s not forget them in this time of year. We don’t need to look to other countries to see poverty and hunger. We can look next door or down the block.
America has always been the land of plenty and strength of soul. Let us not forget this, ever.
