Most financial analysts will tell you that a down market is truly the best time to invest. We’re inclined to agree, especially when it comes to making an investment in our community through United Way.
Although it’s been difficult to escape the downpour of tough economic news lately, we believe there is a silver lining to that dark cloud that seems to be parked firmly on our horizon. To some, that cloud represents doom and gloom and a certain uneasiness about the future. We believe, instead, that the cloud represents the challenge we face in reshaping our country and our community.
Believing in a brighter future is an important step toward achieving any goal.
When searching for hope, we needn’t look farther than the words spoken by President-elect Barack Obama on election night when he said: “It’s the answer that led those who have been told for so long by so many to be cynical, and fearful, and doubtful of what we can achieve to put their hands on the arc of history and bend it once more toward the hope of a better day. It’s been a long time coming, but tonight, because of what we did on this day, in this election, at this defining moment, change has come to America.”
We believe that the message of “Live United” — this year’s campaign theme for United Way — represents an essential mechanism of that change. “Live United” is more than a catchy campaign slogan; it represents an opportunity to engage with United Way year-round and a challenge to work together to address the issues impacting our communities.
2008 United Way Campaign Chair Buzz Rodland believes that folks will step up for this year’s fund drive — noting that “As long as I’ve lived here, whether it was a bond issue for a school, or a sidewalk or senior center, if the public is convinced it is essential, they’ve always been there.”
If it’s been awhile since you considered a contribution to the United Way, now is the perfect opportunity to take a fresh look. United Way’s local leaders have reshaped their organization in a very practical, results-oriented and relevant sense. Relevant not only to those in need, but to each of us in our everyday lives. A visit to www.uwsc.org is a great way to learn more about their work in our community and about the ways each individual can benefit from, and participate in, their efforts.
Giving to your community is the right thing to do. Giving through United Way is a great way to do it. It’s an investment we can all make toward a brighter future.
