Let’s do the math. $2.4 million awarded to the family of just one of the fatal accidents as a result of the cable barriers with more cases pending and you can bet at least two more coming as a result of Tuesday’s carnage.
Marysville Mayor Dennis Kendall believes it’s a “little early” to make a determination that the barriers failed. The DOT’s assistant regional administrator for maintenance and traffic opperations feels a different kind of barrier could have caused a more severe tragedy. I’m curious. Just what is more severe than a fatality? How arrogant must one be to tout statewide safety statistics yet ignore the facts pertaining to a 10-mile stretch of highway where eight lives have been lost since 2000 for the exact same reason.
Maybe the likes of Gov. Gregoire and Reps. John McCoy and Mike Sells will step up and put someone in the position of transportation secretary who may actually have an interest in saving lives. After all, it’s their constituents who are dying on the highway in Marysville.
