I read Jerry Cornfield’s July 1 column, “Work release a hot topic in race” and felt compelled to respond. I am employed by the Washington State Patrol and feel that John Lovick was not fairly portrayed regarding his 31 years of service to the citizens of Washington and Snohomish County. John Lovick, who I still address as “Sergeant,” was my sergeant for approximately six years. In that time I was fortunate to have been able to work for someone of his stature. He was a great sergeant and shining example of a Washington State Trooper as well as a dedicated husband, father, grandfather and representative in the Legislature.
His experience as a peace officer is overwhelming and although retired from the Washington State Patrol, his allegiance to law enforcement reaches many departments, including the Snohomish County sheriff’s office and the Los Angeles Police Department, where his son Jeff proudly serves. Lovick is by no means someone who just wore a badge, nor is his he merely “the politician.” He is without a doubt an exemplary person and leader. I firmly believe Lovick would be a great complement to the already superb Snohomish County sheriff’s office and wear the uniform with honor just as he did for the Washington State Patrol for 31 years.
