All of us mindless, ignorant sheep marched to the polls and voted 2 to 1 to oust the incumbent Marysville School Board members. After reading some of the patronizing comments of those who degrade the intelligence of the typical citizen and parent in Marysville, I think they don’t get it. We are not stupid. We cannot be bought and we do not give the MEA carte blanche to run this district. But we are very aware of the hostility of the school board and the superintendent toward the concerns of this community, our children and the teachers.
It was clear to the majority that the school board tried to force the teachers into a contract they could not live with. Thank God principles and character still matter to our teachers. The MEA is not an evil or all-powerful organization. It is a labor union designed to represent its members in the collective bargaining process. If collective bargaining is such a bad thing, then so is the eight hour work day, five day work week, pay for overtime, medical and dental insurance benefits, safe work environments and all the other benefits that union workers have championed over the years through the collective bargaining process.
It was clear the collective bargaining process was broken under the current school board and with the hostility on public display it meant changes had to happen. Clearly, the results of Tuesday’s election speak for themselves.
I hate that there is so much vitriolic diatribe on both sides of this issue. And, though I am happy we will have a change on the school board, I expect the MEA to bargain in good faith with reasonable expectations for improvements in their contract. I hope members in this community can stop insulting each other and set examples for our children of cooperation and achievement in the face of difficult circumstances.
