In response to Sen. Val Stevens’ guest commentary on Saturday: I questioned some of her facts and discovered that on the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction Web site, it is stated that state Superintendent Terry Bergeson wrote her doctoral thesis on “increasing math and science enrollment of female and ethnic minorities in secondary school.”
Sen. Stevens alleged that Bergeson’s thesis was on “conceptual math” and this is why she (Bergeson) “doggedly refuses to give it (WASL) up.”
Perhaps Bergeson is continuing to upgrade and improve and further research the math WASL because she wants our students to improve their math skills and be able to compete for high-level jobs in math and science.
