Having had the pleasure of working with Michael Plunkett on the Edmonds Historic Preservation Commission, I had a chance to evaluate his ability and commitment to Edmonds and would like to endorse his re-election to the City Council.
Michael is a man willing to think through and act on issues affecting our community. His pivotal role in forming the Edmonds Historic Preservation Commission is a good example. The commission’s role is not one to dictate to the property owner; it’s a means to provide benefits to property owners who are willing to protect their small part of the historical context that contributes to the depth and texture of our town. This was not a knee jerk project; it was a win-win project that took considerable thought, effort and time.
Building heights is another area that virtually invites polarization. But Michael is the kind of council member who will listen to both sides and make a considered choice. He supports height limitations, and when you ask him why, his first answer is to protect views. That is not my concern, mine is that I believe the sense of place that most of us love about Edmonds would be lost if the buildings were to go beyond two stories. We’d lose the feel. The “friendliest city” in Puget Sound does not have the same ring as “friendliest town.” When you talk to Michael he truly listens. That’s the kind of council member I wish to represent my family.
