I am writing to compliment Herald writer Gale Fiege on the Wednesday article concerning the returning soldiers and their families (“Returning soldiers and families have stories of struggle to share”). The story was well written and filled with compassion and insight.
As the father-in-law of a young sergeant in the U.S. Army, the father of a war-time wife, and last, but not least, the grandfather of darling little ones whose daddy is far away in Afghanistan, I can attest to the stress and strain endured by our military families. My son-in-law has been to Korea, Iraq, and now Afghanistan — all in the last five years!
Just as the brave wives and children in the article described it — they miss their loved ones terribly and they are forced to undertake and to accomplish herculean tasks here at home while daddy is at war half a world away. I’m certain that my son-in-law would agree that any recognition he might receive for his service is far better given to his wife and family. Watching my brave family struggle during this difficult time reminds me of the famous quote — “they also serve who stand and wait.”
God bless the returning soldiers and their families. Let’s continue to support those who remain in the field and their families here at home with our thoughts and prayers.
