Misguided blame misses real issue

As a current volunteer at the Everett Animal Shelter, I was quite upset to read the Sunday letter, “Not necessary or humane to kill all” which stated that the Everett animal shelter staff “murdered” defenseless, healthy cats and kittens after discovering a serious virus had infected a stray kitten that was brought in to the shelter, causing the death of that kitten and another.

How exactly does the writer know that all these cats and kittens were “healthy”? I’ve seen nothing but caring individuals at the shelter who do everything they can to get these “unwanted” animals adopted. I cannot even fathom the heartache this must have caused on that horrendous day.

Heartless, stupid and lazy? It’s apparent she has no idea how much time, energy and cost go into running the shelter, not to mention the amount of space available to house the animals. Perhaps she should research the facts before stating what I know to be untrue, as I see first hand the care and attention given to these pets.

My suggestion to the writer is to sign up and volunteer at this shelter to see what really goes on there before she goes spouting at the mouth on something she is apparently very much misinformed about.

The Everett Animal Shelter is an awesome place, the staff does an awesome job and I am proud to volunteer my time there. This would be an irrelevant conversation if people took their “responsibility” of owning a pet more seriously. Let’s place the blame where it really belongs, in the hands of the people who don’t spay or neuter their pets.
