Mom’s trail bench perfect tribute to her

As we approach the 12-year anniversary of the death of our mother, Katie Bettzig, we are reminded of her love of Snohomish, and especially her passion of walking the Centennial Trail.

During her four years of treatment, she would meet daily her sister, Eileen Cornwell, at the Maple Street entrance to the trail for a brisk three-mile walk. She often commented on how lovely it would be to have a bench on the Centennial Trail to rest, adjust walking shoes, or just to socialize.

When Mom passed away, her friends and family made her bench dream a reality. We are grateful to the staff at the Snohomish County Parks Department, who made it so easy to set up a fund for the project, then carried forth our wishes to construct this beautiful and timeless memorial to honor our mother through a gift to the community she loved.

For our family, it not only serves as a loving hobby for our father as he grooms the garden by her bench, but, as our mother did in life, it seems she continues to bring lots of new “friends” to visit Dad while he’s there, in the form of trail walkers!

We would encourage anyone who loves the Centennial Trail, as we do, to consider setting up a similar bench memorial as a remembrance to their loved one.

It is a constant, beautiful reminder of our mom, Katie Bettzig.
