Regarding the Oct. 21 article, “The toll of schizophrenia”:
Like Josh, I have horrifying nightmares while I’m awake.
Congratulations to The Herald for seeing bipolar disorder and paranoid schizophrenia as illnesses and not simply just “men (and women and children) behaving badly.”
To a schizophrenic (or for a manic-depressive misdiagnosed (and mismedicated) as having hyperactive disorder or Alzheimer’s or obsessive-compulsive disorder), the misdiagnosis relieves the patient’s health insurance responsibility because “the patient had the disorder prior to approval of health coverage.” So down the rabbit hole it goes — the general regressive process is: send to a relative, then to a family friend who believes “love cures,” then to Juvenile Hall (to prepare him/her) for jail, prison — death.
As I have encountered many law professionals, medics and hospitals, they have improved their treatment of us and this results in our feeling better about ourselves. I believe their compassion has literally saved my life.
