Obama was elected president twice with a majority of the vote, unlike Bush. So more than 50 percent of the people chose him. The recent letter writer claiming that only 10 percent support Obama is an apparent racist rant referring to the fact that only blacks, who make up about that percent of population, would approve of him. I hope those who supported Obama in 2012 will vote for politicians who support him now.
Mr. Duncan, who died recently from Ebola, was firstly denied the care he needed in Dallas because we have a health-care system more concerned about how a person with a fever and some stomach pain will pay for their care, than where they had been on their travels. Obama has appointed someone to take charge of the challenges that Ebola presents here in the U.S., and he is sending personnel and funds to help defeat the disease in Africa. That is a sensible response so far. A vote for supporters of Obama will be for engagement in fighting Ebola, rather than isolation from the effort.
A vote for Initiative 594 is a chance for common sense to overcome blind fear regarding fire arms. All one has to do is read the Sunday letter, “Monied interests behind campaign,” to see how irrational those against the initiative can be. Unfortunately, rich people too often define the debates in our politics. If we deny them providing funds for issues that we dislike, then we must also deny their funding for issues we favor. I have faith that if everyone who can does vote, our country will have a government that will serve us better.
