New runway won’t lead to larger craft

I have seen the plans for the proposed runway upgrade at Harvey Field and believe that it will provide welcome improvements for flight training, air taxi and recreational aviation. The proposed runway deletes the displaced thresholds of the existing runway and is slightly farther west. The new runway will provide 2,500 feet for takeoff or landing compared to the present 2,600 feet for takeoff and 1,900 feet for landing. Although the takeoff distance available will be slightly less, obstruction clearances during initial climb-out and compliance with noise-abatement procedures will be greater.

Landing operations will be easier and safer for all aircraft at Harvey due to the extra runway length.

The new runway is not likely to lead to a significant change in the character of the aircraft using Harvey. The critical operating regime for “larger” aircraft (multi-engine and/or jet-powered) is takeoff and initial climb-out. Since the proposed runway effective take-off length is slightly less than before, it is highly unlikely that Harvey will become attractive to these larger (and presumably noisier) aircraft.

I have been an pilot, flight instructor, aircraft mechanic and aeronautical engineer for over 63 years (18,350 flight hours). I have also been an FAA designated pilot examiner for 14 years. I have always been proud to be a part of the aviation community because of the great value it places on honesty, integrity and consideration for others. These qualities, which are desirable in any community, are absolutely required of everyone who flies or is in any way associated with flight – survival demands it.

I have known the Harvey family for over 32 years – they are members in good standing of the aforementioned aviation community and are good neighbors. I speak from experience and I fully support their efforts to make the airport better for all.
