I agree with the new taxes put in place by the Legislature and Gov. Chris Gregoire. First, I agree with the majority of new taxes put in place, because Washingtonians need to step up and help out with the budget deficit.
The second reason I support the new budget and tax hikes is because most of the taxes are temporary, with the majority of them ending in 2013.
Lastly, I support the draw of $25 million from the state convention center and lottery, which is offset by $12 million in decreased tax collections. The lottery is an entertainment business, and a “want” item for Washingtonians, not a “need” item.
The majority of these tax hikes (soda, gum, candy, cigarettes) I am positive will impact microeconomics in a good way, making each person think twice about buying a sugary drink every day or those packs of cigarettes — things that inhibit one’s health.
So overall, I agree with the legislation that has been passed to cover the state’s budget deficit.
