This is the first year for the Sounder to run north Puget Sound football fans to Qwest Field for Seahawk home games. I must say that the wait was worthwhile. The trip is fast, convenient and very cost effective for its riders. In fact, they could probably add an additional car in Everett and two in Edmonds to handle the demand on game days.
I was amazed at the initial ticket price of $6 (adult) and $3 (senior/handicap) round trip. It was much less than we paid for Amtrak in prior years. I recently purchased tickets for a game and was surprised to learn the price was decreased by 33 percent. Yes, $4 to Seattle and return; about $16 less than what one would pay for parking for the game.
Is it just a coincidence that no one has asked for tickets yet? After the first game, I figured they would iron out the bugs and start requiring riders to show their tickets. This hasn’t happened yet and I’m wondering just how much longer it will last. Anyone could board the train and ride for free.
With all the controversy over expanding the run to Everett and the associated cost overruns one wonders whether or not our administrators are concerned with excessive expenditures for transportation. Someone needs to be held accountable for checking revenues generated from the Sounder. It appears that many dollars are being squandered.
