Cute as it may have no doubt appeared to many, Thursday’s photo of two Lake Stevens students cuddling on campus does nothing, really, but glorify a trend our public schools should be trying to discourage.
Despite the suggestion of innocence, the attitude depicted in that photograph is dangerous, disastrous and a distraction for public education. We do not send our daughters to high school to engage in these kinds of public displays of affection. Kids need to be reminded all too often on their high school campuses that they are not on a date. It is high school.
The parents of the girl in the photo may have no problem with what she is doing, but it is a disservice to the majority of moms, dads and teachers who are offended by the notion that the main event at school is what MTV, network sitcoms and the majority of movies are selling to our children. The daily newspaper should have loftier goals.
Anyone who doubts the severity of what is really going on here should volunteer to chaperone on a Friday night and catch an eye-full of what passes for dancing at your local high school.
