Patients should be able to access 401k

I am writing with great concern regarding accessing 401K funds. I have had my second cancer surgery in the last two months and have been unable to work. I tried to access money from my 401K to try to survive and pay my bills. I was told by my employer that I more than qualified, but I would have to have all my bills be late (adding late fees and possible collection notices) and that I had to have an eviction notice from my landlord. I have already had collectors calling.

I find it appalling that you have to resort to ruining your credit, and causing more stress to an already very stressful situation. Given the circumstances, I should not have to go through all of this to get my money. My employer is completely understanding and tried everything to get around the federal laws that prevent me from getting any help.

What are people in this situation supposed to do? I don’t want to have to totally ruin my credit and add more stress to be able to get through these hard times. I work in the health-care industry and I know how hard it is for people who have to go through this. I really hope and pray that someone can do something to change this, so all of us who have this terrible disease, or any other disease, can get immediate help.

I have to return to work sooner than expected to be able to get some income. I feel this is really unacceptable. Please find a way to help!
