One of my favorite descriptions of patriotism is from Sen. Carl Schurz (1899) — “Our dignity, our free institutions and the peace and welfare of this and coming generations of Americans will be secure only as we cling to the watchword of true patriotism: ‘Our country — when right to be kept right; when wrong to be put right.’” With that in mind, I would like to propose a new pledge that focuses on our ultimate goal of creating inclusive community:
I pledge to help build a world I can be proud of.
To include others as they are.
To treat everyone with kindness and respect.
To participate in my community and culture.
To share my gifts and talents.
To uplift those around me.
And to encourage others to do the same.
