Sept. 11 brought out a lot of patriotism and the displaying of our flag across our nation. However, nothing has been published on flag etiquette.
When you watch a sports program you see many of the fans and players with their hats on and many more standing with their hands at their sides. Flag etiquette requires that those wearing a hat remove it and place it over their heart with their right hand. Those without a hat are to place their right hand over their heart.
Flags should be displayed with the blue field in the upper left-hand corner from the viewing side. The flag should never be used for advertising purposes of any manner. It should not be embroidered on such articles as cushions or handkerchiefs, printed or otherwise impressed on paper napkins or boxes or anything that is designed for temporary use and discarded; or used as any portion of a costume or athletic uniforms.
I believe that we should display our national emblem at all times but in the proper way. Several years ago the VFW National Home in Eaton Rapids, Mich., put out a small booklet, titled “Our 50th Year Old Glory, The Story of Our Flag,” that contains not only the history of our flag but the etiquette for our flag.
