I feel it necessary to respond to the folks who were put off by the eagle/duckling story.
I am the photographer who took that shot, and can honestly tell you that it was not easy to watch, but … it was a rare glimpse into the survival of this particular eagle family that I have been studying and photographing for nearly seven years.
This was an extremely rare event. This family of eagles normally hunts for “fish” 99 percent of the time, and only duck hunts when survival becomes an issue.
While I do understand that this type of event can be heartbreaking (concerning the ducks), please remember … that’s only half of the story!
I sum it up like this: One mother loses her baby, and another mother feeds hers. It’s all part of the sometimes seemingly cruel circle of life.
It’s not always easy to witness, but it is indeed the truth about our planet. And as I mentioned, you must remember the other half of this story (the positive half).
There was indeed a family of eagles who were fortunate enough to be nourished that day, and will continue on their majestic journey. That’s a good thing!
