Many attribute the fall of the Soviet Union to the policies of the Reagan Administration when the reality is that the Soviet downfall was caused by the specter of their defeat in Afghanistan in the 1980s, compounded by the bankrupting of the Soviet economy from the unsustainable cost of that war. Thus, the Soviet quagmire in Afghanistan is often referred to as “Russia’s Vietnam.”
Upon reflection, it is apparent to any thinking person that Iraq has now become “America’s Afghanistan,” and history will confirm that the policies of the Bush administration led to the moral, spiritual and economic downfall of the United States.
Our once shining nation is now in eclipse. The costs, in both blood and treasure — still not fully understood by most, will be borne by generations yet to come. The ignorance and arrogance of a group of dogma-driven philistines, in the pay of corporate interests, have taken our country into an abyss from which we will not escape. Shame on us all for allowing this to happen.
