Regarding the Feb. 28 article, “Marysville may lead race”: Hopefully The Herald will be mindful of its obligation to the community regarding the future of the NASCAR race track proposals. It’s not enough for The Herald to become a cheerleader and echo the hyperbole of the supportive politicians. The Herald must investigate and explore all issues surrounding the proposal.
Politicians hype the economic boom to the community, but do not mention the costs, nor the fact that projects such as these that promise economic benefits, often return very little to the local economy. What will be the cost to the local taxpayers in terms of infrastructure support, environmental destruction and the general negative effect on the quality of life? The politicians who are competing for this “prize” are primarily interested in how many box seat tickets or season passes they will have bestowed upon them through the largess of the NASCAR conglomerate. Will politicians supporting the construction of the track be willing to sign an affidavit stating they will not accept perks from NASCAR and NASCAR sponsors? I think not.
