President Bush’s proposed increase in the number of American troops in Iraq is nothing short of madness. Our unprovoked invasion of Iraq, which obviously was no threat to us, has tragically destabilized that country and has potentially destabilized the entire Middle East. Our aggression there has led to unchecked violence that has turned an unhappy and oppressed country into a killing field in which, at least in Baghdad, it seems no one is safe.
Our recent attempt to secure Baghdad through a troop increase has been an utter failure, as everyone involved acknowledges. The notion that more violence will end the violence that our violence begot is absurd. It will lead only to more American and Iraqi deaths and a more disastrous defeat when we finally come to our senses and get out. This madness must stop – now.
