I applaud the Snohomish County Council’s decision to have the urban center proposed regulations evaluated by the Urban Land Institute (Tuesday article, “County studies new zoning for urban centers”).
Maybe the council will find that some of locations would not provide the best model for an urban center or suggest some of the parameters would make ideal examples.
The previous urban center demonstration program exemplified by Newberry Square was panned and praised on these pages in some detail.
One of the features on the comprehensive plan was a pedestrian/bike bridge across I-5 from the north end of the Ash Way transit center to the Interurban Trail. If this were in place, people could get to the transit center and Newberry Square from east of I-5 and from the west side people could go to the bowling alley, other businesses and the Martha Lake park without relying on motorized travel.
Hopefully the final produced ordinance will have requirements that developers, neighbors and the rest of the citizens can count on.
