The recent announcement that the Snohomish County Council is only scheduling one day of hearings on the unbelievably complicated and far reaching proposed critical areas rules now before it is a scandal.
The proposed rules, hidden away on its Web site, indicate that the county intends to try and sneak into law egregious, extremist rules that may well take away the property rights of property owners and make affordable housing a thing of the past in Snohomish County.
Radical environmental Councilman Dave Somers is chair of the council committee that has come up with these so-called critical areas ordinances (CAO) and a quick look at his campaign contributions shows that he acting on behalf of his benefactors at Futurewise, whose actions threatened to shut down Little League baseball in Snohomish, and Paul Brainerd, who apparently wants to shut down all development in the county.
No matter how this turns out when the final council vote is taken, citizens deserve better than this one day of hearings. Every property owner should respond in writing to the county about these new rules and insist that extensive public hearings be held at locations around the county in the name of democracy and open government.
