The stakes are high in this year’s presidential election. If candidate Donald Trump is elected, among the threats we will face is the loss of the Affordable Care Act, or ACA, colloquially known as Obamacare.
Recently, candidate Trump has begun signaling that if he is elected, he will repeal the ACA. If he succeeds, he will be taking away health care insurance and preexisting conditions protection from millions of Americans.
Since it was enacted in 2010, the ACA has grown in popularity and become ingrained in our health care system. It has become settled law. Currently, the ACA provides health care coverage to over 40 million Americans. It protects people with preexisting medical conditions from being turned away or being charged higher insurance premiums. Children can remain on their parent’s insurance plans until age 26. Insurance plans are required to cover preventive care and to limit out-of-pocket costs.
Candidate Trump claims that he will replace the ACA with something better. His track record of vague and unsubstantiated claims begs to differ. A vote for Donald Trump is a vote to take away from millions of hard-working Americans not only health care insurance and preexisting conditions protections, but the dignity and peace of mind that comes with having access to those basic foundations of freedom.
