Put country before party interests

I am writing in response to a May 20 letter, “Political criticism: Patriotism shouldn’t silence our voices.”

Besides having several statements that are devoid of historical fact and rife with political envy over conservative agendas that have been extremely successful (Reaganomics), Cindra Zugel is obviously a liberal partisan hack trying to paint herself in patriot clothing. If she were not, she would have mentioned some misdeeds by Democrats in her letter. There apparently have been none by her account of history. She does no honor to her brave and honorable relatives who gave their lives in defense of our country. Traditionally it is Democrats who cut military and defense spending and support.

The differences between the major political parties in this country don’t amount to a hill of beans. The fact that one’s supporters are liberals and the other’s are conservatives is the only difference. The officeholders’ main concern in both parties is to get re-elected and wield power (i.e. control tax dollars).

The true measure of a patriot is someone who will do what is right for the country, not the party. Someone who calls a skunk a skunk no matter whose side he or she is on. Unfortunately, this happens a lot more in the conservative movement than the liberal. Conservatives still believe in right and wrong and aren’t afraid to say so. Can you imagine Christians supporting an accused rapist in the White House? Newt Gingrich and Bob Dole were dumped for far less. Only when Americans again become Americans first and put the hyphenations second will this country be truly great again. There are over 25 veterans in my family also and some still serving. I vote freedom first.
